Building Stronger Communities, One Donation at a Time
Thank you to our 2024 Blood Donors!
On June 14th for World Blood Donor Day, Egi Women and Sagicor Financial Services collaborated on a blood donation drive in support of the Barbados Blood Collection Centre. Promoted through local newspapers and social media, the initiative garnered significant interest, with many donors pre-registering their attendance and eager to make a difference.
The results were impressive: a substantial number of donors participated, with the majority of sign-ups coming from the combined promotional efforts of Egi Women and Sagicor. This marked a significant increase from previous years, showcasing the power of community support. The donors experienced a seamless journey, from efficient pre-screening and interviews in the Sagicor mobile medical unit before moving to the donation area. Post-donation, they were treated to light refreshments, a final health check, keepsakes, and photo opportunities.
The Blood Collection Centre staff expressed deep gratitude for the support. Senior Blood Collecting Technician Nurse Wendy Lorde noted the unprecedented participation, crediting the initiative for its support at a critical time. Blood Collection Technician Dana Walkes praised the drive for encouraging voluntary donations that could benefit the general public, instead of only being donations for a friend or relative. The success of this event highlights the urgent need for a consistent blood supply in Barbados, especially given the current healthcare challenges. Egi Women remains dedicated to supporting the Blood Collection Centre and calls on other organizations to join in this essential cause. With the consistent low supply of blood within the blood bank posing a major risk for Barbados, there is much more work to be done as a community to address the ongoing blood supply challenges.
